Girma has previously worked as a design engineer at the Irrigation Authority of the Southern Region, Hawassa, Ethiopia, and as a lecturer at Hawassa University, Ethiopia. As a design engineer, he was actively involved in reconnaissance and feasibility study, and the design of small-scale irrigation projects. As a lecturer, Girma lectured for regular courses in engineering mechanics, hydraulic and irrigation structures, hydraulics, surveying, groundwater hydrology, and advanced topics in water resources engineering, and served as an adviser on research projects. He also served as a member of the engineering panel at Hawassa University, Ethiopia.
