Capacity building both for the local community and partner institutions, including universities, is one of IWMI’s core activities. The East African and Nile Basin office has sponsored and supervised three MSc students from Ambo University, three from Bahir Dar University and one from Arba Minch University. All have recently completed their theses. IWMI scientists, Teklu Erkossa, Gebrehaweria Gebregziabher, and Petra Schmitter supervised the students with the support of the CRP on Humidtropics and the ILSSI project.

One of the students, Teshager Assefa, received the Eshetu Chole Memorial Award from Addis Ababa University for the Second best MSc Thesis of the year in Economics entitled Analysis of Technical Efficiencies of Small Scale Irrigation Technologies.

To date, the office has supported more than 200 postgraduate students. 18 of these were PhDs (14 Male and 4 Female) and 184 MSc students (132 Male and 52 Female).
