The session will provide an open forum for showcasing and discussing developmental challenges in transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs) in southern Africa. Multiple needs and demands – for conservation and development of natural resources – compete to create simultaneous fruitful as well as contentious development trajectories. Climate change and rising demand for water has accentuated the need for more explicitly integrating water management and adaptation strategies into TFCA conservation efforts. Many people regard TFCAs largely as extended protected areas that entail the development of vast landscapes in which wildlife-based tourism is the dominant economic sector.
