Addressing root causes of gender inequity in wetlands management
This project supports the Gulf of Mottama Project’s (GoMP) efforts to adopt gender-transformative strategies in establishing a management framework for the Gulf of Mottama (GoM), Myanmar’s fourth Ramsar Site designated in 2017. By identifying root causes of marginalization based on gender and other identities, the project promotes more participatory wetlands management and equitable benefit flows amongst heterogeneous local communities. Central to this work is a deeper analysis of the intersecting influences of gender, class and other social identities in local power relations and their manifestation in wetlands management. The project intends to use this analysis to provide i) insights to the GoMP so that it can better engage and empower a broader cross-section of local stakeholders, and ii) share lessons with wetlands management and broader community-based natural resource management practitioners as a global scale.
