Groundwater information system and atlas for Pakistan

In Pakistan, groundwater is extracted not only for agriculture but also for domestic and industrial use. Groundwater overextraction has proven to be a continuous threat to the long-term sustainability of groundwater aquifers. The government departments dealing with groundwater lack spatial information on groundwater vulnerability. Considering the issue, main objective of this assignment is to develop a web-based groundwater information system for the Sindh Province of Pakistan and a digital pilot groundwater atlas for the Nara Canal command area, Sindh, to collate existing groundwater information of the province. The project aims to provide an operational groundwater resource management system considering groundwater quantity and quality along with groundwater vulnerable areas for evidence-based decision making. The project also intends to improve the groundwater management capacity of the Sindh Irrigation Department through capacity building of relevant staff.
