World Wetlands Day 2021

A wetland may not sound like the most exciting place. “Wet land” after all, feels incidental rather than critical. And yet wetlands are home to 40 percent of our planet’s species. 400 million people live close to wetlands and depend on them for survival – for food, for water, and for their livelihoods. That’s why we choose to celebrate world wetlands day each year.

This year’s theme is freshwater, and it’s a theme close to our heart. After all, we’ve worked on projects in freshwater wetlands from Ghana to Myanmar, and understand how critical these freshwater wetlands are for food and work.

Most importantly, perhaps, is the role of wetlands in climate change. They provide protection against storm surges and coastal flooding, and also vital carbon storage systems: some wetlands can store up to 50 times more carbon than rainforests, and they play an important role in water purification.

They are vital for our today, and they are vital for our tomorrow. Which is why today, we’re celebrating #WorldWetlandsDay
