Informs investors on where/how/when AWM technologies can work. The ALWM project funding under WLE continues to support identified gaps in farmer led irrigation projects and strongly builds on the ongoing work under the extension phase of Innovation Laboratory for Small Scale Irrigation (ILSSI), the IWMI-TATA Partnership (ITP), the recently funded project by SDC and Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) and the recently acquired GIZ project in India. The work under WLE aims at providing guidelines and tools for the private and public sector to sustainably out/upscale water lifting technologies and water solution packages as a bundle.

In 2020 and 2021 IWMI will use the scaling pathway for FLI under ILSSI with private sector and adapt these to identify scaling opportunities for suitable AWM solutions (irrigation and SWC) through public-private partnerships in 2 other African countries. Special emphasis will be given to ensuring that the scaling pathways is inclusive of women and youth. IWMI under WLE will initiate a solar review in 2020 to be completed in 2021 drawing on a review in Africa and Asia. The information available to establish a geodatabase on FLI for Ethiopia and Ghana was insufficient in 2019. In 2020 the scope is adapted by identifying changes in FLI irrigation using RS. Ministries, donors, private sector entities have requested access to the spatial information to guide investments in farmer-led irrigation.

Contact Person
Schmitter, Petra <p.schmitter@cgiar.org>

Lead Center

International Water Management Institute (IWMI)

Donors

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Texas A&M University

Sir Ratan Tata & Training of relevant stakeholders to support sustainability of compost plants in Batticaloa district; 2. Assessment of effectiveness of wastewater treatment systems (a. Vavuniya town and b. Vavuniya Hospital), local operational capacity, and the need to include further infrastructure measures for health and environmental risks mitigation; 3. Recommendations on adapting existing training and capacity building initiatives of the local stakeholders involved with or responsible for the provision of wastewater management services in the Vavuniya district, also in view of sanitation safety planning; and 4. Recommendations on sustainable municipal solid waste management strategies for the Mannar district.

Training Program for FSM

The program targets existing entrepreneurs and organizations to move into treatment and re-use solutions in sanitation, by lowering the barriers and risks to move into this sector. The program will provide technical assistance, leverage existing infrastructure as much as possible (reducing capex

funding dependency at an early stage) and enable local business partners in developing viable business models. These business models will be based on existing business models and innovations from around the globe and adapted / replicated to the local Indian context. In the context of this program, Enviu wishes to award a sub grant to IWMI for its international network and expertise in the field of Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) business models, execution of feasibility studies and technical support to entrepreneurs.

RRR impact and up-scaling

The goal of the programme is to reduce rural poverty and improve the sustainability of food production and environmental security in Africa by addressing multiple aspects of development in landscapes, river basins and regions. The overarching objectives of this multifaceted programme are to: Improve food, environmental security and governance in selected areas through simultaneous development of multiple ecosystem services (soil, water, biodiversity); Improve water and soil nutrient management at landscape and basin scales to support rural and peri-urban livelihoods; Enhance local stakeholder capacities to take informed decisions on the provision of services and goods related to adopting effective agricultural water management solutions and other innovations pertinent to resource management practices, institutions and policies.

Contact Person
Nikiema, Josiane <j.nikiema@cgiar.org>

Lead Center

International Water Management Institute (IWMI)

Donors

<img typeof="foaf:Image" src="https://wle.cgiar.org/sites/default/files/styles/partners_logo/public/partner-logos/Gates-transparent.png?itok=XCWDNiLu" alt="Bill & The design of these online tools is based on the notion of agent-based modeling and allows for stakeholders in the river basin to express their options for water resources development of river basin and explore how their decisions could interact with the options of other stakeholders and influence the ecosystem services provided by the water resources in the basin. To this end, a seminar will be held to generate real-time responses and gather unfiltered feedback on the utility & design of the online tools. We will also monitor the status of the use of the online tools, improve the system design/performance given the feedback, and analyze the stakeholder input data collected by the online system to generate insight into in a real world situation how stakeholders in a river basin could compete and collaborate in future water resources development activities.

This project is also contains a generic ABM framework for complex ecosystem service analyses in WLE focal regions.

Contact Person
Ringler, Claudia <C.RINGLER@CGIAR.ORG>

Lead Center

International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

Donors

CGIAR

Partners
IFPRI - International Food Policy Research Institute, IRD - Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Lehigh University, RIVERFUTURES LTD, University of Illinois, Wetlands International

Completed

Start/End dateJanuary 01, 2017 — December 31, 2017

Research ThemeEnhancing Sustainable Agriculture

Cluster
4.1 Risks associated with water variability mitigated

Regions
Eastern Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Southern Africa, Western Africa

Wed, 29 Nov 2017 06:24:00 +0000 Amanda 12545 at https://wle.cgiar.org https://wle.cgiar.org/project/science-policy-exchange-processes-and-learning-alliance-around-strengthening-role-ecosystem#comments Watershed management practices under changing landuse practices in the semi-arid region of Mali and Niger https://wle.cgiar.org/project/watershed-management-practices-under-changing-landuse-practices-semi-arid-region-mali-and

This research builds on the existing data collection and knowledge generated on watershed management practices in southern Mali since August 2015. The research is aimed at providing scalable technologies proven to be successful in Asia, East Africa and parts of Mali through integrated watershed management approach. At the farm/plot level the focus is on evaluating the impacts of in-field soil and water conservation practices. At watershed scale, existing land and water management practices will be assessed and evaluated under changing landuse systems. Community perception on land and water management practices will be evaluated to develop support strategies for longer-term conservation approaches and agricultural productivity improvement. Particularly, this project will:

(a) evaluate the impact of in-field soil and water conservation practices on runoff and erosion rate and crop yield,

(b) investigate the spatial and temporal variations of land management interventions under changing land use practices,

(c) evaluate community perception (gender disaggregated) on farm level in-field soil and water conservation interventions, and test ways to promote wider adoption, and

(d) integration and evaluation of contour bunding and agroforestry systems on crop-livestock productivity.

The impact of soil and water conservation practices (contour bunding) on socioeconomic aspects and biophysical systems have been evaluated and results are published. The work in 2021 involves evaluating crop-livestock productivity and household income through the use of contour bunding and agroforestry options.

Contact Person
Zemadim, Birhanu <Z.Birhanu@cgiar.org>

Lead Center

International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)

Donors

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

McKnight Foundation

CARE

Partners
ICRISAT - International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, IER - Institut d’Economie Rurale (Mali)

Completed

Start/End dateJanuary 01, 2017 — January 31, 2021

Research ThemeLand and Water Solutions

Cluster
2.1 ALWM Solutions for Resilient Smallholder Livelihood and Landscape Systems

Regions
Western Africa

Countries
Mali

Topics:
LandWater Wed, 29 Nov 2017 05:30:00 +0000 Amanda 12536 at https://wle.cgiar.org https://wle.cgiar.org/project/watershed-management-practices-under-changing-landuse-practices-semi-arid-region-mali-and#comments
