Mitigating the competition for water of transboundary water courses of Central Asia by improving water use efficiency

The growing population of Amudarya River basin has resulted in an increased demand for water for food and hydropower generation. Most of the renewable water resources are transboundary with the main rivers flowing through several states. The hydropower generation potential is upstream, where the key reservoirs regulate the river flow, while the irrigated land, requiring 80% of the river flow, is located downstream. With water in short supply the competition for water between the upstream hydropower and the downstream agriculture results in reduced water use efficiency, and overall, in reduced basin-wide water productivity. Since first best solution is complicated due to transboundary nature of the Amudarya River, second best solution is proposed aiming mitigating competition for water by improving water and energy use efficiency.

Measuring, Understanding and Adapting to Nexus Trade-offs in the 3S River Basins

The purpose of this project is to improve the quality of planning and investment in the 3S region by undertaking activities in three consecutive "streams": i) nexus assessment; ii) capacity building for regional decision-making processes; iii) regional dialogues. IWMIs contribution to this study is primarily to support the nexus assessment. Based largely on literature review and guided by a Technical Advisory Group (TAG), IWMI will contribute to understanding of the current condition in the basin, the principal drivers of change and the likely trade-offs associated with different development options. IWMI will conduct sector assessment, economic assessment and livelihoods assessment each of which will comprise a baseline analyses to understand the current situation and an assessment of possible future trends based on development plans and drivers of change. To the extent possible all data/information will be disaggregated by basin and country.

Improving sustainability by better incorporating the environment in water trade-off assessments

Informing Change in the Indus Basin

1) A virtual knowledge platform with data from all basin countries to address challenge of dispersed data which precludes understanding linkages and trade-offs;

2) Web-based tools to support more informed decision making between and across political and administrative borders; and

3) Facilitating inter-provincial and basin-wide dialogue to generate and share knowledge over important contextual changes, their drivers and opportunities for their management in the basin, including improved cooperation over water management, and adapting to climate change.

Understanding the ecosystem services of flood pulsed systems

Recent and ongoing investments in the Ayeryarwaddy Delta and upstream are thought to be having an impact on agro-ecological conditions through modifications to the flood pulse. These can significantly alter both the hydrology of the delta and land use patterns, which can further undermine flood-based food systems, resilience of livelihoods and undermine natural ecosystems.

The aim of the spatial analysis conducted through the WLE funded activities is to contribute to the efforts being made by researchers at IWMI, WLE and WorldFish to build an integrated picture of the factors influencing the hydrology of the delta and impacts. During the inception of the FBFS project (mapped to FP2), a gap was noted in existing knowledge of the changes which have occurred to the flood pulse over the past two decades, and the location of areas which are currently suitable for flood based farming systems.

With support from WLE, this project has focused over the past two years on the development of a new approach to develop suitability maps for flood based farming systems in the delta, that take account of changing flood patterns. The project has focused on the development of scientific outputs that complement ongoing bilateral funded initiatives, and are used by projects to ensure a sound scientific basis for any recommendations made, and thus to have a greater impact and contribution to the sustainable development of the delta and the equitable use of water resources, and in particular building the resilience of the livelihoods of female farmers where applicable.

Support to the roll-out of SDG monitoring and reporting by countries enhancing food security and sustainable use of water resource use

The SDGs are a major global innovation that is leading the world to a sustainable future. IWMI has been involved in many aspects of the development of the SDGs and this project seeks to maintain this influence. This project will continue to contribute to SDG indicator development within the UN, with an increasing focus on the Water Stress indicator 6.4.2 with the e-flows subcomponent. It will also critique progress on development of the Agenda 2030.

Rapid population growth and uncoordinated water infrastructure development challenge water and food security in the Nile River basin. Focusing on Target 6.4 of Sustainable Development Goals, this study analyzes the effects of improving water use efficiencies on water scarcity, water stress and food security (Target 2.4) in the Nile River basin using a scenario-based approach. Scenario analysis is conducted using the IMPACT model.

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals on Socially Inclusive and Sustainable Water through Fiscal and Pricing Reforms in Vietnam and the Philippines (UNEP - Geneva)

The overall objective of the study is to support Vietnam and the Philippines in delivering multiple SDGs , notably SDG6 targets related to socially inclusive and sustainable water. The study will analyse fiscal instruments and water pricing policies currently in place or under discussion, including fiscal measures in relevant sectors which affect water availability/use, assess current and future investment needs in the water sector, and develop policy reform options for consideration by the governments.

Alternative Pathways to improve electricity access and Energy Roadmaps Development and Energy access in the Eastern Nile - water and food implications

Assess implications for food and water security from alternative energy development pathways. This project combines a project in Ethiopia and one in Pakistan to improve energy development.

The second part of this project involves developing a regional energy model for the Eastern Nile that incorporates energy export and import and assess related water and food implications to support the Nile Basin Initiative that is looking for alternatives to contentious water sharing challenges. The impact on greenhouse gas emissions will be assessed.

This activity develops a 50 page paper with three sections for a World Bank Flagship report on agriculture and the economy.
