Implementing Resource Recovery from waste for Reuse (RRR) businesses and related feasibility studies

The objective of the combined projects is to enhance safe use of MSW, excreta and wastewater in agriculture as revenue source for the waste or sanitation value chain. To achieve that, 4 PPPs are at various stages of development under the WaFo and CapVal projects of IWMI to produce e.g. 700 tons of Fortifer in Ghana in two co-composting plants, one plant to convert organic solid waste into low-cost fuel (1,000 tons of briquettes) and one on the use of wastewater treatment ponds for aquaculture. The project also includes a BMZ funded marketing strategy for Fortifer.

Urban waste recycling Ghana (CapVal)

The project, CapVal, proposes three resource recovery and reuse solutions that have a high potential to incentivize local sanitation planning and management in Ghana, reduce waste transport costs, support the lifetime of landfills, and reduce environmental impacts.

From Waste to Food (Wafo), Ghana

The essense of the project is to enhance safe use of excreta in agriculture as a means for managing feacal sludge (FS) and as revenue source for the sanitation value chain. To achieve that, this project will kick-start a production plant capable of producing 1,000 tons of fecal based fertilizer material, Fortifer in Ghana. The project will establish appropriate partnerships and detailed business plan for the business. It will ensure the necessary certification from the Ghanaian government and come up with a national marketing plan for Fortifer in two cities. This project will demonstrate that Fortifier technology improves the sustainability of the sanitation value chain by generating a revenue stream, which measurably improves cities? fecal sludge management.

Marketing an Innovative Fortifer

Increasing population coupled with rapid urbanization has greatly accelerated the waste generation rate in developing countries whereas insufficient collection and inappropriate disposal of liquid and solid wastes result in water, land and air pollution, and pose risks to human health and the environment. IWMI has developed innovative excreta-based fertilizer formulations collectively described as Fortifer pellet tailored for different agricultural uses. Fortifer is a safe, efficient and cost effective organic fertilizer pellet produced from fecal sludge and other waste streams such as domestic and agricultural waste that can be blended with additional input materials to enhance nutrient value. The overall goal of this project is to promote a wider use of Fortifer pellets in the agricultural sector and to design marketing strategies that support and enable small and medium scale private enterprises engaged in the production of organic fertilizer pellets to effectively market and introduce Fortifer for agricultural use in Ghana.

This project supports the development of RRR curriculum, RRR/RUL publication series, an RRR tool box, global databases (with FAO) and the outreach of Flagship 3 at major conferences. In addition, GlobE - UrbanFood Plus is mapped to this overarching project.

GlobE - UrbanFood Plus

IWMI is contributing regional expertise on urban food systems and nutrient flows to different sub-projects (SPs) of the larger GlobE (Urban Food Plus) project , in particular for the supervision of PhD students, support of field trials and activity backstopping. This is the second part of of the ongoing 5 year project, co-funded by BMBF and BMZ.

This project combines several smaller projects on RRR investment climate analysis, business models, and gender analysis. The activities are as follows:

Septage Management & Collection Pattern: Septage Characterisation and Study on Septage Management & Collection Pattern for Negombo Municipality (NEWRI)

To carry out septage characterisation for Negombo Municipality in Sri Lanka to develop a plan for implementation phase of the project.

Solid waste management in North SL-Ph II

The objective of the intervention is to strengthen the integrated solid waste management process and build the capacities of the local authorities in safe wastewater management, water quality monitoring and coordination in the districts of Batticaloa, Vavuniya and Mannar; The expected outputs of the project are 1. Training of relevant stakeholders to support sustainability of compost plants in Batticaloa district; 2. Assessment of effectiveness of wastewater treatment systems (a. Vavuniya town and b. Vavuniya Hospital), local operational capacity, and the need to include further infrastructure measures for health and environmental risks mitigation; 3. Recommendations on adapting existing training and capacity building initiatives of the local stakeholders involved with or responsible for the provision of wastewater management services in the Vavuniya district, also in view of sanitation safety planning; and 4. Recommendations on sustainable municipal solid waste management strategies for the Mannar district.

Training Program for FSM

The program targets existing entrepreneurs and organizations to move into treatment and re-use solutions in sanitation, by lowering the barriers and risks to move into this sector. The program will provide technical assistance, leverage existing infrastructure as much as possible (reducing capex

funding dependency at an early stage) and enable local business partners in developing viable business models. These business models will be based on existing business models and innovations from around the globe and adapted / replicated to the local Indian context. In the context of this program, Enviu wishes to award a sub grant to IWMI for its international network and expertise in the field of Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) business models, execution of feasibility studies and technical support to entrepreneurs.

RRR impact and up-scaling

The goal of the programme is to reduce rural poverty and improve the sustainability of food production and environmental security in Africa by addressing multiple aspects of development in landscapes, river basins and regions. The overarching objectives of this multifaceted programme are to: Improve food, environmental security and governance in selected areas through simultaneous development of multiple ecosystem services (soil, water, biodiversity); Improve water and soil nutrient management at landscape and basin scales to support rural and peri-urban livelihoods; Enhance local stakeholder capacities to take informed decisions on the provision of services and goods related to adopting effective agricultural water management solutions and other innovations pertinent to resource management practices, institutions and policies.

Integrated rural urban water management for climate based adaptation in South Asian and African cities

Two (90% secured) pipeline projects funded by IDRC (India) and AfDB (Africa) will study options for integrated urban water management in 4 African and 2 Indian cities. The project is supported by smaller ongoing studies on the feasibility of sanitation options for FS/wastewater management in Nepal and India/Delhi, capacity development, implementation and policy formulation.

Private and public sector involvement in the energy-food nexus

The EU funded WABEF project (Western Africa Biowastes for Energy and Fertilizer) is a collaborative project of CIRAD, RUAF Foundation and institutions in Senegal (UCAD and IAGU), Benin (Songhai) and Mali (AEDR) that will disseminate viable anaerobic waste digestion technologies. Overall project activities included: -Implementing an inventory of technologies employing anaerobic digestion of biowaste, adapted to the Sudano-Sahelian context -Development of a tool to compare and choose the most viable technology for a specific situation -Two existing waste treatment plants will be made operational as demonstrators -Technical and policy briefs will be developed -An on line distance learning module will be developed based on the project?s results -A regional school for practitioners and decision-makers? enrichment will be organised With support of WLE a special issue of the UA Magazine has been developed.
