Irrigation benchmarking for sustainability

The renewed interest into irrigation medium and large schemes by various IFIs requires filling two principal knowledge gaps : 1) benchmarking of irrigation schemes with new demand on water use efficiencies beyond scheme scale to contribute towards SDGs and others, and 2) capacity development demand to design and manage existing and new scheme investments. This project updates IWMI the existing Online Irrigation Benchmarking (OIBS) Tool through integration of gender indicators into the tool and develops a System Asset Management (SAM) tool to support irrigation managers in improving scheme management.

Assessing Models of Public-Private Partnerships for Irrigation Development in Africa (AMPPPIDA)

The project will develop a series of case studies, using Focus Groups, Key Informant Interviews, document review, and Net-Mapping to understand the social, economic, and environmental impacts of various types of PPP arrangements. The information will feed into a toolkit that identifies different PPP options, with explicit provision for affected communities to be involved in decisions and benefit-sharing arrangements to guide future investment options, and metrics to track progress and benefits for different stakeholders. Throughout the project, partners will engage with stakeholders, including government officials, private sector representatives, donors, and community-based organizations, to understand capacity needs and gaps to negotiate equitable and inclusive PPPs and to facilitate the process of future investment in irrigation.

Agricultural Water Stewardship project

In this paper we outline some of the key aspects of agricultural and water management policy that are needed to incentivize the key actors in the water sector to enact good water stewardship in their use of the resource. We look at a broad set of incentives, ranging from those which motivate profit and the desire to avoid penalties – as well as those incentives which rely on normative values around cooperation and the desire to voluntarily contribute towards overall social welfare.

Irrigation water management for food security and income generation in smallholder farming systems

Zimbabwe has made significant investments in irrigation development compared to other countries in the region, but water is increasingly becoming scarce in the country because of growing competing demands for the resource among agriculture, domestic and industrial uses. Several smallholder irrigation schemes have been developed in the country with the aim of increasing food security, but return on investments has been unsatisfactory and their functionality has remained largely low due to a number of interrelated factors. Among them; infrastructure deficiencies, unfavorable land tenure arrangements and small land holdings, poor management, inadequate access to markets, and lack of technical knowledge for maintaining irrigation infrastructure and water management. In most schemes irrigation scheduling is lacking and farmers are not trained to manage water; water management is mainly to ensure equitable distribution among farmers to avoid conflicts. However, it is important to manage irrigation water in each of the schemes if maximum benefits of the investments made are to be realized. Consequently, research on finding ways to improve water productivity in smallholder irrigation schemes in Zimbabwe remains pertinent.

Water Scarcity Initiative (WSI) for the Near East and North Africa Region (NENA)

The main research objective of this project is scale out the evidence-based integrated solutions to poor-resources farmers in rural communities to improve their livelihood through sustainable management of natural resources in MENA countries. This will be achieved through the FAO_Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia. The Project has a strong focus on dissemination of proven agriculture production systems’ packages including, mechanized raisedbed technology (Egypt), greywater treatment (Egypt and Jordan), conservation agriculture (Morocco and Tunisia) and-led Water Scarcity Initiative (WSI) for the Near East and North Africa Region (NENA). The following countries are involved in the piloting phase of the pr deficit supplemental irrigation (Morocco and Tunisia). The expected outcomes of this collaboration include improved packages and methodologies that are widely adopted by farmers to sustainably increase crop-water-land productivities. This will result in increasing farmer income and improve stakeholders’ livelihood.

The ultimate goal of the WLI is to improve rural livelihoods in selected countries in the MENA region. This will be achieved through the implementation of a variety of bio-physical and socio-economic related activities geared towards the development of improved technologies and innovation packages to address critical development challenges; as well as to build local, national, and regional capacity to ensure sustainable adoption and utilization of proposed solutions. Effective implementation of activities will result in one or more of the following outputs which are aligned with USAID?s Feed the Future (FtF) Indicators: 1. Number of hectares under improved technologies or management practices 2. Number of farmers and others who have applied new technologies or management practices 3. Number of individuals who have received USG supported short-term agricultural sector productivity or food security training 4. Number of food security private enterprises (for profit), producers organizations, water users associations, women's groups, trade and business associations, and community-based organizations (CBOs) receiving USG assistance 5. Number of stakeholders implementing risk-reducing practices/actions to improve resilience to climate change as a result of USG assistance 6. Number of new technologies or management practices in one of 3 phases of development. The outputs identified above will in-turn contribute to: 1. Increased water, land, and crop (for human and animal consumption) 2. Enhanced awareness of sustainable water and land management practices 3. Increased rural income 4. Increased resilience and environmental sustainability. Achievements of the proposed outcomes will then result in attaining the WLI goal - Improved Rural Livelihoods.
