Water, Land and Ecosystems - 1.1 Landscape Restoration https://wle.cgiar.org/cluster/11-landscape-restoration en Collective Land Restoration through Agricultural Intensification in Makueni County, Kenya https://wle.cgiar.org/project/collective-land-restoration-through-agricultural-intensification-makueni-county-kenya

Restoring Degraded Landscapes (RDL) is positioned to influence global restoration agendas such as 20x20 in Latin America, AFR100 in Africa, and Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) to ensure sustainable and equitable outcomes. These restoration efforts will, at least partially, be financed by private investors. For example, the LDN Fund is designed as an impact investment fund, currently managed by MIROVA a global asset management firm. WLE's theory of change impact pathways show that the CRP must provide scientific backstopping in the areas of: 1) baselining and exante modeling, 2) cheap and effective monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems, and 3) governance and institutions that are socially equitable. This framework (P420) outlines how RDL can provide these services and engage with privately financed land restoration projects which is largely an unfamiliar area for CRP's.

Contact Person
Nijbroek, Ravic and Quintero, Marcela <m.quintero@cgiar.org>

Donors

CGIAR

Partners
CIAT (Alliance) Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT Regional Hub (Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical)

Completed

Start/End dateJanuary 01, 2017 — December 01, 2018

Research ThemeRestoring Degraded Landscapes

Cluster
1.1 Landscape Restoration

Countries
Kenya

Fri, 05 Nov 2021 06:57:03 +0000 nilu.rajapakse@gmail.com 19779 at https://wle.cgiar.org https://wle.cgiar.org/project/collective-land-restoration-through-agricultural-intensification-makueni-county-kenya#comments Advancing global and regional networking and partnerships for positioning better our messages around land restoration in agricultural landscapes and influence investments and policy actions https://wle.cgiar.org/project/advancing-global-and-regional-networking-and-partnerships-positioning-better-our-messages

While global awareness of land degradation is high, awareness of the benefits of integrated landscape approaches and cost-effective strategies to achieve it is not. Deliberate use of intra specific crop diversity in farmers field can be a productive alternative to agrochemicals. Assessment to the amount and distribution of functional intra-specific diversity for annual and perennial crops in agricultural landscapes is needed to be able to improve access to diversity and information on this diversity to restore and maintain resilience and productivity in agricultural landscapes. Benefits to farmer or farming communities from their use of local diversity, are necessary to identify the different ways of using genetic diversity within production systems to restore and maintain agricultural landscapes. The work focuses on (I) the use perennial horticultural crops to rehabilitate saline and water scarce environments, (ii) the role crop and pasture genetic diversity on farm to buffer and rehabilitate lands under unpredictable environmental change, (iii) the role of on farm crop genetic diversity to restore ecosystem services to regulate pest and diseases.

Contact Person
De Santis, Paola <p.desantis@cgiar.org> The program will address land restoration using an integrated approach and, together with partners, will identify options that can provide multiple benefits to local communities. the program recognizes that often poverty is the ultimate cause of degradation and if this is not addressed and recognized it will problematic to have options adopted unless they are linked to income generation and livelihood improvement.
