The Global Landscapes Forum in Lima, Peru will gather 1500 cross-sector participants to discuss the landscape approach and how it can inform the UN’s new Sustainable Development Goals and the Framework Convention on Climate Change. The landscape approach recognizes that agriculture, cities, forests, rivers and other ecosystems are all interconnected. It seeks integrative policy to ensure equity across sectors and sustainable management to ensure a future of healthy and abundant natural resources.
WLE and CIAT will be a main implementing partner at the event and hold a number of activities.
The forum also offers a unique youth session for individuals (18-30 years old) involved in forestry, agriculture, fisheries, mountains and other landscapes. The session will include a series of roundtable discussions and opportunities for individuals to pitch ideas to a group of experts (AKA the dragon’s den.) The Forum will be structured around the following four themes:
1. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INTEGRATED LANDSCAPES APPROACHES
Sessions may focus on: case studies and best practice examples from research and development; dynamic landscapes; governance and decision-making in the landscape; success stories and lessons learned from approaches across sectors
2. FORESTS, AGRICULTURE, MOUNTAINS AND LAND USE IN THE NEW CLIMATE REGIME
Sub-theme on forests and climate change
Lessons learned from REDD+, and whether they can be applied to other land use challenges, including but not limited to: governance, benefit-sharing, finance and MRV; REDD+ and its relation to other land use sectors; REDD+ in a new climate agreement…and other related topics
Sub-theme on resilience, vulnerability and climate-smart agriculture
Mitigation-adaptation approaches; climate-smart agriculture; landscapes in NAMAS and National Adaptation Plans; food production for a growing population; value of ecosystem services for resilience to climate and other external shocks…and other related topics
3. LANDSCAPES AND THE GREEN ECONOMY
Sessions may focus on: the role of the private sector and measuring impact; drivers of land use change; impact of urbanization, migration and consumption on landscapes; innovations in land use finance; enabling rural communities; assessing practice and results of green economy, Low Emission Development Strategies and other concepts
4. LANDSCAPES AND THE POST-2015 DEVELOPMENT AGENDA
Sessions may focus on: the role of landscapes in poverty reduction; renewables: energy, food and water from the landscape; global development partnerships for sustainable landscapes; evidence-based landscapes targets and indicators for Sustainable Development Goals; land rights, governance, conflict and stability in SDGs
