4th International Fecal Sludge Management Conference (FSM4)

Worldwide, 2.7 billion people rely on onsite sanitation but management of fecal sludge is very limited. Untreated waste ends up entering the urban environment, with significant health and environmental implications. Creating fecal sludge management (FSM) infrastructure and public services that keeps fecal sludge out of the environment is a major challenge for achieving universal access to sanitation.

FSM4 is the fourth annual FSM conference and will be held in Chennai, India. WLE will be sharing research products and results from its Resource Recovery and Reuse theme.

WLE and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) are holding a half-day workshop on Thursday, February 23 from 13:30-17:30 on Innovative Business Models for Scaling Up Resource Recovery from Fecal Sludge. The session will not only look at the technical innovations that would lead to more widespread recycling of resources from fecal sludge, but will also consider what safety guidelines, business incentives, and policies need to be in place to make this practice more sustainable and viable. A new manual on Business models for fecal sludge management will be launched as part of the workshop.
