Josiane Nikiema

Dr. Josiane Nikiema leads the Research Group on Circular Economy and Water Pollution, which is dedicated to addressing challenges related to adoption and implementation of circular economy business models and mitigation of water pollution. She is based in the International Water Management Institute's (IWMI) West Africa Office (Accra, Ghana) and has over ten years’ post-doctoral experience in the field of environmental sciences. Her work is partially supported by CGIAR Water, Land and Ecosystems.

Through her research activities, Josiane works on optimization of treatment technologies, leading to recovery of water, nutrients and organic matter from domestic wastewater, fecal sludge and organic solid wastes. She also pilots sustainable nutrient recovery business models in Ghana, Sri Lanka and India. Josiane is active in designing integrated urban water management plans for cities, and works on solutions for enhanced agricultural water security e.g. through the safe reuse of domestic (treated) wastewater for irrigation and aquaculture.
