I completely agree with Fred's perspective that it is not appropriate to single out climate change as the culprit for development problems.
That said climate change still remains a unique, formidable challenge to our future, as it will not be possible to stop this process even by the most determined measures. And it is the result of global activities that are only accessible to local action to a small extent (unlike e.g. land degradation).
Climate change has to be put into the context of sustainable development. But ultimately, consumer culture will have to be addressed to reach to a development model that provides a happy and resilient life for all.
