We are observing with great interest current public/private sector initiatives in organic waste recycling. To mention only the one with potentially highest impact in Ghana, zoomlion, with its new composting facility just outside Accra. Our research tries to add value from the agricultural end by a) understanding farmers' needs, perceptions and demands, while b) studying business models incl. quantitative market analysis to close nutrient loops in a more sustainable way than what we experienced in the past, in Ghana and the region at large.
Organic waste collection is a part of the system. A demand and willingness-to-pay analysis some years back showed that the compost market in and around Accra could be satisfied by 'only' composting the organic waste generated in Accra's food markets. But there is scope to reach out to other sectors, like plantations, which could catalyze also household based collection systems.
