The Commission for Sustainable Agriculture Intensification (CoSAI) is working in partnership with FCDO and CCAFS as part of their webinar series “to set the path for a transformation in agricultural innovation systems in the lead up to COP26”. The webinar series is focused on “building evidence for transforming agricultural innovation systems under climate change”. Also part of the All4Climate initiative, this series will present the findings of five evidence reviews commissioned under the Research, Development and Deployment (RD&D) strand of the Sustainable Agriculture component of the COP26 Nature Campaign.

The evidence CoSAI is developing to support increased and improved investment in innovation is being presented and discussed at Webinar 1 (26 May 2021) focussed on the current investment in agricultural innovation in the Global South and at Webinar 5 (23 June 2021) focussed on what investment in innovation is needed for transforming agricultural systems in the Global South.  The presentation of these studies and subsequent discussion lay the foundation for the case being developed by the Commission to enable the increased investment in innovation for sustainable agriculture intensification in the Global South.

THE CURRENT INVESTMENT IN AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH | WEBINAR 1

How far is the global picture of innovation today from where we need to be? This webinar will provide an insight into the global baseline for investment, categorized by types of funder, implementer, and topic, and estimate how much of this funding currently aims to promote the multiple economic, environmental, and social objectives of sustainable agricultural intensification (SAI).

The webinar will also highlight the global estimates for funding over the past 10 years in research and innovation for agricultural systems in the Global South, as well as more detailed estimates for the patterns of innovation funding in specific contexts and environments, which will be discussed. The webinar will:

  • review the recent flows of global public and private investment in agricultural innovation relevant to the Global South;
  • showcase the various types of investments made; and
  • estimate how much of this investment actually promotes sustainable agriculture intensification.

The subsequent panel discussion will enable a build from the current baseline to discuss future funding changes, including innovative instruments and approaches that deliver innovation at scale in a variety of different agriculture system contexts: large-scale farming, smallholder farming systems, and peri-urban systems. The panel will also go on to discuss where future priorities should lie to enable the transformation of global food systems.

WHAT INVESTMENT IN INNOVATION IS NEEDED FOR TRANSFORMING AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH? | WEBINAR 5

The session will provide an opportunity for participants to question and discuss the estimates, and also share their views on the highest priority areas for investment. How far is global investment in innovation today from where we need to be to support a transformation in the agricultural system to meet the SDGs and climate goals? This session will provide the latest global, regional and country estimates of the ‘investment gap’, by experts from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture Intensification (CoSAI).
