Key Water Issues

The country is a major consumer of water for agriculture in the region, due to its geographic cantor and the legacy of the Soviet policies. Deteriorating infrastructure is one of the major causes of the decrease in the availability of surface water resources within the irrigation systems of the country. An eventual move away from high water-consuming crops can be observed in the national policies, while efforts are being made to explore possibilities for effective groundwater utilization. Rising salinity level is seen as an additional burden on agriculture and water management. Proposals are being made on alternative means of salinity reduction techniques, such as the introduction of the licorice plant. This is, however, yet to receive policy recognition
