The World Water Week Conference in Stockholm featured a panel on “Addressing Water Security Challenges in the Himalayan Region,” co-organized by the US State Department and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). This marked a significant shift in openly discussing Tibet’s role in the Himalayan water system. Tibet’s critical ecological influence on the region’s freshwater supply, serving 1.8 billion people, was underscored. Concerns arose due to China’s water diversion and hydropower projects in Tibet. The panel urged cooperation for sustainable growth and called for increased dialogue to address environmental issues in Tibet and the Himalayas.
