DowntoEarth: Deluge here, drought there: India’s rainfall conundrum continues

The numbers of very heavy rainfall events across India were 381 in June, 457 in July and — more than double — 1,138 in August, totalling 1,976 over three months.

There was a significant rise in the number of very heavy rainfall events — when the downpour exceeds 116 millimetres — in August from June and July: They are marked in yellow and red in the maps above, developed by International Water Management Institute (IWMI) based out of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The numbers of very heavy rainfall events across India were 381 in June, 457 in July and — more than double — 1,138 in August, totalling 1,976 over three months. The maximum such events in a single month were in MP (214 in August), followed by Gujarat (199, same month).
