IWMI is organizing a schools quiz to celebrate World Water Day. The program aims at promoting awareness among schoolchildren, of the importance of fresh water in sustaining life – for the environment, agriculture, health and trade.

Quiz topics will be based on ‘water and the environment’ in Sri Lanka as well as around the world and a special audio and pictorial segment is planned, to add interest and stimulate competitiveness among the schools.

Entries are now closed and 34 schools have entered. The quiz was open to all children studying in grades 7, 8 and 9 in schools in the western province.

The semi-finals and final are scheduled to be held at the IWMI Yellow River Auditorium. Although planned for World Water Day, 22nd March, the quiz had to be postponed to 5th April because of schools’ end-of-term tests.

All participants will be rewarded with certificates and gifts.  The winning teams will receive trophies, certificates and valuable prizes of digital cameras, MP3 players and book vouchers. A set of encyclopedias will be presented to the school of the winning team.

The quiz is organized in association with the Funday Times, the children’s section of The Sunday Times,
