Watermedia.org: After the wave: lessons learnt from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami

This chaotic approach prolonged contamination of the water. Scientists from the International Water Management Institute, headquartered on the island, visited the tsunami affected areas within days of the disaster. Realising what was happening they worked with NGOs and local authorities to explain to well owners that they should remove debris and dirty water form their wells but not keep pumping out the water.
