IUCN 1989-1995 Wetland Directories
Asia, Africa and the Middle East

Summary

In the 80’s a series of regional directories were published which aimed to provide a detailed inventory of important wetlands within each region. The objective of the directories was to present “as comprehensive a review as possible of existing knowledge of the important wetlands in the region under consideration”. The directories were created through the compilation of information from a wide range of available sources including governmental and non-governmental conservation bodies, fisheries institutions, hydrological institutions, universities and natural history museums.

The directories begin with an introduction which summarises the general situation of wetlands within the region, and describes the institutional and legal base for wetland conservation and research. This is followed by a series of accounts of wetlands which are known or thought to be of the greatest importance from the point of view of nature conservation. A site description is included for each wetland which includes basic information on size and location, habitat types, principal vegetation, ownership, degree of protection, land use, fauna, threats, research, conservation and relevant literature.

Only 1000 copies of the directories were printed, 500 in English and 500 in Spanish and they are now out of print. These directories constitute a valuable wetlands data source. As part of the Global Wetland Inventory and Mapping initiative at IWM we will be making the Asian, African and Middle Eastern Wetland Directories available online in a digital format.
