IWMI Global Wetland Initiative
|
|
The IWMI Global Wetlands Initiative seeks to provide a multi-purpose and multiple-scale approach to wetlands,
wetland conservation, and the wise-use of wetland resources. In particular, we put an emphasis on wetlands
within agricultural landscapes and landscape approaches for better management of agricultural interfaces with the
terrestrial water cycle. A broad program of wetland research and outreach activities seeks to delineate
and understand the interactions of agriculture with terrestrial aquatic ecosystems, its role in meeting expanding
global food security needs, and the urgent necessity of conserving wetland biodiversity. Through
IWMI's many wetland related activities and partnerships, ranging from internatiional and regional initiatives
to development of methodologies for local scale impact assessment, a broad range of wetland research is aimed
specifically towards the needs of developing countries, in particular to continue to expand agricultural
production. Improving landscape management to facilitate biodiversity conservation, and adopting
improved farming systems which minimize nutrient and pesticide loads on the downstream environment, are essential
if globally significant wetland resources and wildlife habitat are to be conserved. Wetlands play an important
role in the livelihood of local communities, thus promoting wise use of wetlands recognizes that wetland resources are
essential components of rural livelihoods in many parts of the world, particularly so for many subsistence farmers and
and fishing communities in developing countries.

The project aims to provide a multiple-scale and purpose-driven global wetland knowledge center, particularly a mapping
and inventory data and methods resource. Outreach activities will include the delivery wetland related
research and knowledge sharing, through international partnerships and regional projects that will support capacity
building for further wetland assessment and management. More details on each of the core projects of
the Global Wetland Initiative can be found through the links on the left of this page.

IWMI Global Wetlands - Interactive Web Map Server
|
|
The "Interactive Global Wetlands Map Server" is the most versatile feature which provides information links about global distribution of wetlands. Just clicking on the location (global map position) would fill you with all the information (region, country, extent of area, flora & fauna, threats, etc.) relevant to specific wetland. The Map Server serves information on Wetlands in Asia, Oceania, Neotropics, Middle East.
