MSEC
The
Management of Soil Erosion Consortium or MSEC is one of the four
consortia established through the soil, water, and nutrient management
(SWNM) program of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural
Research (CGIAR). It uses an integrated, interdisciplinary, participatory,
and community-based approach to research that involves the land
users and other stakeholders on a catchment scale. It focuses
on the on-and off-site impacts of soil erosion, emphasizes community
involvement, and provides scientific data for a rational decision
making.

advantages offered by the NARES, IARCs, and ARIs which conduct
research at different levels, ranging from the individual plot
and farm to the catchment, regional, and national scaless,to develop
principles of global relevance. It is coordinated by the International
Water Management Institute (IWMI) through its regional office
in Bangkok, Thailand and by the Philippine Council for Agriculture,
Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD)
in the Philippines. The consortium's activities have been evolving
from a more focused study on soil erosion management to integrated
land and water management. Eventually, it is expected to provide
valuable inputs into a more comprehensive and holistic approach
to natural resource management.
Consortium
Partners
There
are now six partner countries directly involved in the implementation
of the project. Other NARES are involved indirectly through their
participation in other related projects. The Institute of Research
for Development (IRD) in France is a major collaborator particularly
in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. The partners of the consortium
are:
- Center for Soil
and Agroclimate Research and Development (CSAR), Bogor, Indonesia
- Soil Survey and
Land Classification Center (SSLCC), Vientiane, Lao PDR
- Nepal Agricultural
Research Council (NARC), Kathmandu, Nepal
- Philippine
Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research
and Development (PCARRD), Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines
- National Park Wild and Plant Conservation Department
(NPWPCD) Bangkok, Thailand
- National Institute
for Soils and Fertilzers (NISF), Hanoi, Vietnam
- Central Research
Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA), Hyderabad, India
- Institute
of Research for Development (IRD), France
- International
Center for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), Bogor, Indonesia
- International
Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics (ICRISAT),
Hyderabad, India
- Southeast
Asia Regional Center for Graduate Study in Agriculture (SEARCA),
College, Laguna, Philippines
- Asian
Institute of Technology (AIT), Patumthani, Thailand
Donor
Support
The
coordination of the consortium is primarily supported by the contributions
from the governments of Japan, France, Norway, Australia, Thailand
and the Philippines through the CGIAR. Implementation of activities
in the countries is funded through the ADB-supported project "Catchment
Approach to Managing Soil Erosion in Asia" (ADB-RETA 5803).
