About the International Water Management Institute

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is one of the 16 'Future Harvest' group of agricultural and environmental research centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

The research program of IWMI centers around five core research themes:

  • Integrated Water Management for Agriculture
  • Sustainable Smallholder Land and Water Management Systems
  • Sustainable Groundwater Management
  • Water Resource Institutions and Policies
  • Water, Health and Environment

The Institute has a multidisciplinary approach to water management research. Most of IWMI’s research combines the expertise of economists, agronomists, hydrologists, engineers, sociologists, management specialists and health researchers. The research team is composed of approximately 100 scientists from 16 different countries.

All IWMI research is done with local partners (universities, government agencies, NGOs, research centers, etc.). The Institute's outputs are public goods that are freely available for use by all actors in water management and development. The IWMI Research Reports, data and other publications can be downloaded from the IWMI website or received free of charge from the IWMI publications office. A series of tools for improved water management is also available.

IWMI's headquarters is in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and its research is put into action through research teams working in regional offices for India (in Hyderabad), Sri Lanka (covering China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Central Asia), Africa (in Pretoria), and South East Asia (in Bangkok).
