Key Messages

  • Larger-scale infrastructures, such as major dams, are almost always planned with multiple uses in mind. This enhances the cost-effectiveness of the investment. At the local level, conventional water services are designed for single uses. This squanders any opportunity for higher cost-effectiveness through MUS.
  • MUS is a bottom-up approach to water management which recognises that communities use multiple sources for multiple uses. Local knowledge and participation are vital for the design, construction and management of sustainable water supply systems.
  • The MUS approach delivers the “most MDGs per drop” and enhances environmental sustainability.
