Workshop on Drought Assessment and Mitigation in South West Asia.
7th - 8th October, 2004. Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The workshop on Drought Assessment and Mitigation in south west Asia was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka during 7 and 8 October. This two day workshop convened by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) brought together over 40 scientists, policy makers, donors and NGO’s from across Asia in an effort to improve strategies to combat drought in the South West Asia region with the focus on west India, southern Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The workshop was held as part of the Drought Assessment and Mitigation Project in South West Asia, an initiative begun by IWMI in May 2003 with support from the US State Department Regional Environment office for South Asia. The Project has focused on carrying out an assessment of the different approaches that are taken at regional, national and local levels in the three countries to tackle the growing problem of drought. Collaborating Partners in the Project have gathered in Colombo to exchange views on existing good practice in drought management with the aim of drawing up a list of priorities for future anti-drought work in the region. Experts from International organizations such as the FAO, Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre and UN ESCAP, also attended the workshop and shared their experience of drought management. Presentations made during the workshop are available at this site together with the list of participants, agenda and other documents.
