Water Productivity in Central Asia

Recent developments in the remote sensing science, and their application to water management provide a basic impetus for this study with the two-fold objective: a) to assess the scope for comparing the performance of water management units using remotely sensed information and identifying data needs and procedures; and b) to investigate the potential of such an analysis for supporting water management at farm and field scales. Knowledge Sharing Project

The proposed knowledge sharing initiative is complementary to overall goals and objectives of 11 selected CGIAR projects. Thus, the KS will be implemented as integral part of all such projects, through in-built knowledge sharing vision at the overall project management. WTO Cotton

Global concerns about the environment of Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, are focused not on land but rather water resources, in particular the environmental and human disaster taking place in the Aral Sea. There is no doubt that this disaster was precipitated by the development of irrigation, primarily to produce cotton. However, the major reason is not an actual reduction in the basin water supplies, but rather the decision to use those supplies for agriculture.

 

WUA Manuals

As part of the on-going projects on water sector and agricultural reforms in Uzbekistan, IWMI-Central Asia is actively collaborating with the ADB and World Bank-funded projects to produce a set of four manuals to train and guide water user associations in Uzbekistan. TEMPUS

IWMI is one of the partners in implementing TEMPUS project and will continue its support to the project in year 2005. The core of IWMI’s support will be funding of the MSc thesis research of one or two from each country (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan), in total no more than 4 students. [Read more]

Kazakh WUA Training

From 1st to 6th of August, 2005 IWMI-Central Asia held a series of training workshops in the town of Jettisay, Makhtaaral district, South Kazakhstan to build required capacities of local WUAs called here Rural Water Users Cooperatives. The major goal of this exrecise requested by the Counterpart Consortium office based in Kazakhstan was to train trainers among the local WUA representatives.
