In 2000, IWMI began work in the Aral Sea region, which includes the 5 countries making up Central
Asia - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, once a part of the former Soviet Union.
In 2001, IWMI opened a sub-regional office in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to oversee these activities. Since then IWMI’s work here
has concentrated on addressing some of the key water management issues facing the region. While carrying out its work, IWMI
collaborates closely with farmers, canal managers, relevant Ministries, NGOs, other CG Centers and donor funded projects.

In particular, IWMI's research here focuses on identifying best practices for water savings, improving irrigation
performance, reversing trends in land degradation and salinity, and contributing to the development of effective water
resource institutions in the region.
During 2001 and 2002, IWMI established its formal partnerships with ICARDA, Scientific Information Center of the Interstate
Commission for Water Coordination (SIC-ICWC), the Global Water Partnerships’ Central Asia chapter, and Tashkent Institute of
Irrigation and Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME) (presently, Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Amelioration).
A strong research collaboration has been established with ICARDA, through a joint IWMI-ICARDA staff appointment based at
ICARDA headquarters, which has led to significant improvements in identifying and implementing joint research projects,
especially in the Central Asian region.
Besides, IWMI has close relationships and collaborations with other important development partners in the region, such as
the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), UNDP, IDB, JICA, etc.
Such relationships are maintained through regular donor coordination meetings, joint field missions, various focused
meetings, workshops and round-tables to discus issues facing the region. |
