The purpose of this research is to further understand the ways in which the participation process can be designed so as to address the power imbalances that characterize multi-stakeholder negotiation in river basin management. The research will consider the practices being carried out by two organizations that also actively participate in the Both ENDS/ Gomukh project ‘River Basin Management: A Negotiated Approach’. The research will look at the practices underway which are seeking to strengthen the representation of disadvantaged groups in two areas characterized by high poverty rates, class and ethnic differences.
