Geographical Focus

The Sudd Wetland: Sudan

Project Description / Background

The Sudd Wetland, located in Southern Sudan, is one of Africa’s largest wetlands; it supports a diversity of ecosystems services. After the peace agreement of 2005, the area becomes stable and attracting many of the displaced people. Though the Sudd people are poor, the wetland is well endowed with rich natural resources to support the livelihoods of the people, while still maintaining the health of the ecosystems.

The goal of this project is to develop research proposals for knowledge generation, sharing and application activities that will contribute to improvements in the livelihoods of the local inhabitants in the Sudd wetland, while ensuring ecosystem resilience, and efficient water use. The planned project(s) is classified into: short and long term plans, implemented at two levels: small (pilots), and large (entire) Sudd wetland, respectively.
