project meeting, Khartoum, Sudan 
|
USDS project meeting held in Khartoum, Sudan at UNESCO-Chair
in Water Resources. Members of the USDS project and staff
from UNESCO-chair attended the meeting.
The field visit was also organized by the Sudaneese team,
to Sennar Dam, main canals from Sennar Dam (K57), Roseries
Hydropower station and Eldiem hydro gauging station.

IWMI, ITC and UNESCO-IHE joint workshop
IWMI together with UNESCO-IHE
organized a two day workshop on June 4-5, in Addis Ababa entitled
“capacity Building cum problem Solving”. The workshop
attended by 35 participants from Ethiopia and from overseas. His
Excellency Ato Asfaw Dingamo, minister of Water Resources, Ethiopa
opened the workshop and expressed his support to the endeavor
of linking student studies to research requirements from the region

Visit of Dr. Pay Drechsel,
to Addis Office, 8-12, June
Dr. Pay Drechsel, IWMI
Theme Leader, Agriculture Water and Cities, visited IWMI-NBEA
office from 8-12, June, 2007.
During his visit he had a
meeting with the IWMI staff to discuss what is being done
at the Addis Office. He had also a field trip in Akaki-Addis,
Kolfe and Lafto, the outskirts of Addis, where wastewater
irrigation is a practice; as well as visit to the control
irrigation site Godino irrigation farm, outside Addis.
During his visit IWMI-NBEA organized an
open seminar on the 11th June, 2007. The seminar was attended
by participants from different ministries and offices in
Addis, such as the Ethiopian Development Research Institute,
Environmental Protection Agency, the Addis Ababa Urban Agriculture
Department, Addis Ababa Health Bureau , and the Agricultural
and Health Bureaus of Oromiya regional state. |

Visit of Ms. Dilini, Wijeweera to Addis Office, 17-20
May
Ms. Dilini Wijeweera, Head, Communication and
Knowledge Sharing Unit (CKG) , IWMI-WorldFish IKG, has visited
the Ethiopia office. During her visit, Ms. Dilini has discussed
communication and knowledge sharing issues with the staff. She
has also visited the areas around the outskirts of Addis, in which
waste water urban agriculture is practiced.
Visit of Dr.Hugh Turral in Addis
Office
Dr. Hugh Turral visited Addis
Office from Jan . During his visit, there were a presentation
of the different projects by the staff involved in the projects.
There was an interesing seminar on "Water, Livestock, and
Basin" presented by Dr. Hugh Turral. Dr. Hugh had also a
field visit to Awasha Irrigation project and the Blue Nile Gorge.

and Dr. Rebecca Tharme to Addis Office, January

Dr.
Deborah Bossio and Dr. Rebecca Tharme
has visited Addis Office.
During their visit meetings with staff, seminars with differnt
officials in ILRI, and field trips was organized for them.
- Field Visit 1: Koka and Belbela-Wedecha dam and irrigation
areas, on January 27
- Field Visit 2: Blue Nile, on January 30
Nile Development
Forum: Nile
Development Forum 2006 press Conference, held in Addis Ababa,
Nov, 28 2006. The conference was attended by Hon. Asfaw, Minister
for Water resources of Ethiopia, Mr. Audace Ndayizeye, Executive
Director NBI, Hamere Wondimu, Senior Program Officer-SVP Coordination
project and Gordon Mumbo, Regional Project Manager, CBSI. Ato
Tefera, TAC member for Ethiopia. Two Staff from IWMI-NBEA also
attended this meeting (http://www.nilebasin.org/NDForum2006.htm).
NBI-SYNERGY
Workshop: The
NBI Synergy workshop was held from 9th-10th Feb.2007 in Entebbe,
Uganda. It was attended by 34 participants and it was opened by
Mr. Audace Ndayizeye, Nile-SEC Executive Director. The workshop
announcement and general information on the project can be accessed

An Inception
Workshop held on "Up-Stream
Down-Stream impacts in Nile", on
Dec 06-08, 2006, at Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
The project title is “Improved Water and Land Management
in the Ethiopian highlands and its impact on stakeholders dependent
on the Blue Nile”, and a brief title “Upstream-Downstream
Impacts in Nile.” Participants from the different stakeholder
institutions were present.
WATERMAN:
A kickoff workshop on the WATERMAN project
was held on November 23-25, following the IIPE Steering Committee
meeting. The project aims on the dissemination of research results
in semi-arid and arid ecosystems with a focus on sustainable water
resource management in Ethiopia, with a duration of 18 months.
Steering Committee Meeting:
held on "Impact of Irrigation
on Poverty and Environment (IIPE)", on November
22, 2006, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The aim of the meeting is
to evaluate progresses and provide guidance to enable completion
of the project in 2007.
