2nd Finding mission


June 2006 updates on IWMI-RUAF CFF Programme

IWMI Mission to Freetown in June was to:

  • formally launch the Freetown urban and peri-urban agriculture project
  • conduct training of trainers programme for selected resource persons who could play a role in subsequent training on multi-stakeholder processs for action planning and policy formulation (MPAP) in urban agriculture
  • train and constitute a city team of stakeholders who will drive the implementation of FUPAP (Freetown Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture Project).
  • FUPAP was successfully launched by Dr. S. Monde,  Minister for Agric and Food Security (MAFS), Sierra Leone  on the 5th of June. The launching was attended by about 30 participants
  • A three day training of trainers workshop was organised for 7 resource persons on the issues of urban agriculture to ensure common understanding.
  • A 5-day training workshop was conducted for 24 senior and mid-level staff of key stakeholders in UA in June  with participants from Sierra Leone except two from Gambia and Nigeria.
  • A 15 member city team on UPA in Freetown has been constituted
  • There is an opportunity to link urban waste management to agriculture as a  means of employment for poor women in the cities
