SADC Monitoring IWRM Demonstration Projects

Project Description / Background

The SADC/DANIDA Regional Water Sector Program has initiated IWRM demonstration projects in five SADC countries. IWMI contributes to this by co-designing and implementing a participatory monitoring methodology and by documenting the processes and impacts of improved water management on poor women’s and men’s livelihoods.

 

Goal 

  • to capture experiences from the projects, in particular the application of IWRM principles

Special emphasis shall be on stakeholder participation, gender and poverty reduction focussing on improving people’s livelihood. The principles of multiple sources / multiple use and water for household production shall be applied if at all feasible.

  • to disseminate lessons learnt / best practise etc., in close consultation with the Awareness Creation Component of the Regional Water Sector Program, including feedback to the communities affected by the projects.

 

Specific Objectives

Development Objectives:

To document an IWRM based design and implementation process that positively affect peoples livelihood.

Immediate Objectives

  • To document the detailed project design that is based on IWRM principles and the approach of multiple sources / multiple use systems.

  • To establish supportive monitoring systems for IWRM projects

  • To disseminate lessons from the project implementation

 

Strategy

IWMI as Monitoring Agent strikes the balance between credible and verifiable (scientific) documentation and stimulating the Implementing Agent and the communities involved towards self-monitoring and process documentation and flexible adjustment of the project on the basis of the results found and lessons learnt during the process itself.

Outputs

  • Detailed Project Proposals from 5 countries in which the ways in which IWRM principles are applied is well articulated

  • Record of the implementation of demonstration projects.

  • Evaluation and Dissemination of lessons and best practice (Evaluation Report and short presentations reports from each project in close corporation with the Implementing Agent and the regional program awareness creation component).

  • Short presentations of the implementation and achievements that can be used for awareness creation activities during the course of the project.
