Overview
 |
|
|
|
 |
| |
2 million
people are affected
by water-related
diseases worldwide;
most of them are
children under 5 years.1 |
|
|
|
| |
½ the world’s
population is at risk of
being infected by
malaria.2 |
|
|
|
| |
Approximately
90% of cases
occur in Africa
where malaria is
most intense.3 |

Agricultural water use impacts both human health and the environment in several ways. The International Water Management Institute's (IWMI's) approach focuses on agroecosystem management, where the sustainability of the ecosystem is based on protecting both the health of the people (who are reliant on it) and the wealth of natural resources that it contains.
Goals: |
| |
• |
to put health and environmental issues on the water management agenda |
| |
• |
to create tools to better address the health and environmental aspects of water in agriculture |
| |
| Major findings and publications based on IWMI’s earlier work have been archived here under the following resource areas: |
| |
• |
|
Malaria and water management |
| |
• |
|
Drinking water and domestic use |
| |
• |
|
Wetlands and biodiversity |
| |
• |
|
Wastewater use for agriculture |
| |
• |
|
Pesticide use and abuse in irrigated areas |
