Managing Land and Water Resources in Coastal Zones

Theme 2: Land, Water and Livelihoods

The impacts of the project were highlighted by the leaders of Bac Lieu province: “the project findings contributed realistically and effectively to the adjustment of land and water use policies in our province” and “… improved water management both for rice and aquaculture, as well as on-farm technologies for rice production”.

In Vietnam, the provincial partners and the national participants highly appreciated the project outputs that supported their decisions in water management, and the conference organized in their province provided exposure from different countries. Hence, the People’s Committee of Bac Lieu province contributed about US$ 7,000 for the conference, and requested CA Book which resulted to be translated into Vietnamese. The international participants also rated the conference highly. A “Bac Lieu” group of international researchers from 19 countries was formulated following their recognition that the conference provided a very useful forum for exchanging knowledge on delta management and creating a bridge between researchers and decision makers. A biennial conference series that focuses on natural resource management issues specific to coastal deltas in tropical regions was proposed, and the next conference will be the “Delta 2007” organized by this group.

Project activities are going on. One of the outcomes in Vietnam is the establishment of a Regional Water Management Alliance for Ca Mau peninsula approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development based on the recommendations of the project partners.
