- WHO and USEPA guidelines are appropriate in the context of wastewater treatment-re-use practices in South Asia. Null Hypothesis: WHO and USEPA guidelines should be combined with a series appropriate implementable and institutionally supported risk mitigation options to ensure health, food security and sustainable livelihoods.
- Wastewater farmers (and families) are at significantly higher risks of helminth infection & diarrhea as compared to control populations: Null Hypothesis – household and community hygiene practices are the dominant factor affecting helminth infections & diarrhea
- Anthelmentic medication programs are a cost effective and sustainable option to minimize risks associated with wastewater re-use (both as a means of source reduction and community health).
- Wastewater irrigation has significant negative impacts on vegetable quality (Cd and Pb as well as helminthes and E. Coli in wash water) and fodder quality resulting in direct impacts on human and livestock health. Null Hypothesis – wastewater irrigation combined with a suite of appropriate risk mitigation tools can be sustainably utilized for vegetable and fodder production.
- Can gender equitable policies and action plans be developed that promote urban and peri-urban agriculture and sustainable wastewater reuse through strategic training programs and multi-stakeholder action planning? Null Hypothesis - Alternative methods are required to effectively develop and implement suitable policies.
- Both Projects were initiated in 2005. Outputs from the BMZ funded project in the form of peer reviewed journal articles are not expected until mid-2007. For the RUAF-CFF Projects UPA and policy enabling team has been formed for Hyderabad and Bangalore.
- Pilot projects have been identified for further partner cities in South and Southeast Asia. Policy awareness seminars have been conducted and training programs initiated in both Hyderabad and Bangalore.
- Strong institutional and community linkages (for implementation) have been formed with relevant stakeholders in all cities (Bangalore, Hyderabad, Faisalabad).
