Assessment of Wastewater Irrigation Practices in Selected Cities of less Developed Regions

Theme 3: Agriculture, Water and Cities

The research question

What is the (estimated) extent of wastewater irrigation, the practices underlying it and its impact on livelihoods of the poor in less developed countries across Africa, Asia (central, south, south-east), Latin America and the Middle East?

Objective

The main objective of the project is to quantify the extent and significance including the livelihoods dimension of wastewater irrigation and the range of conditions and factors that influence such use.

Methods

  • A questionnaire survey was conducted via selected consultants in the 53 cities selected. Since a clear understanding of wastewater irrigation practices requires information pertaining to diverse disciplines (urban planning, health, water and sanitation, irrigation, water quality, urban food supply and markets etc) the main consultants were requested to use multidisciplinary teams wherever possible.
  • Secondary data sources (existing reports, census data, etc.) focus group discussions with users and target groups, and key informant interviews were the sources of information for completing the questionnaires (one per city).
