IWMI Global Research Division

IWMI's Global Research Division (GRD) is based at IWMI headquarters in Sri Lanka. Global processes such as climate change and variability, global food trade and subsidies, urbanization and shifts in diets, agricultural investment flows and promotion of bio-energy all influence water use and hence water availability for food, livelihoods and nature. Research at the GRD contributes to a better understanding of the linkages between global processes and local water use by both assessing current impacts and possible future outcomes. GRD staff also work with other researchers on cross-regional syntheses and the development of lessons and tools which can be applied widely. Research on basin water management and interactions between water for food and water for nature feature prominently at the GRD.

Much of IWMI's research takes place in data scarce environments and requires innovative approaches to fill knowledge gaps at relatively low cost and make data available to researchers and decision-makers through global public goods. Researchers at the GRD build on remote sensing applications and global modeling tools to provide better information on irrigated areas, wetlands, water productivity, droughts, and environmental flow requirements. Our researchers also collect data on the condition of water resources and trends in management and institutional responses, including the collection and analysis of transboundary water law documents.

In 2007 around 28 researchers are working in the GRD assisted by Post Doctoral Fellows, Ph D students and research support staff.

The Sri Lanka Program

The Sri Lanka program carries out research in IWMI's host country, Sri Lanka, and comes under the Global Research Division. This program centers around two types of research ; studies that generate generic solutions to land and water management which are of global importance, and research that is of national importance with visibility and impact within Sri Lanka. IWMI works primarily in the Ruhuna benchmark basin in Southern Sri Lanka as well as in other areas. Key projects include studies on irrigation infrastructure development and its impact on poverty alleviation, the environmental impacts of agriculture on wetlands and inland fisheries, malaria risk mapping, drought monitoring, livelihoods and impact assessment, wastewater agriculture and sanitation for poverty alleviation, as well as a synthesis of the Uda Walawe basin in Sri Lanka carried out for the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture (CA).

Sri Lanka Program has a 2 researchers assisted by research support staff, and draws in resources from the GRD and even other regions, as necessary.
