What is RSS?
RSS is a form of XML (eXtensible Markup Language) that codes headlines, story descriptions, and other data that can be scraped by news readers. Its name is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication.

RSS is a method for getting and sending news and information. You can subscribe to an RSS feed and have the latest news and information sent to your RSS reader program. The RSS reader program will alert you when there is new information for you to read.

RSS is a dialect of XML. All RSS files must conform to the XML 1.0 specification, as published on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) website. http://www.w3.org/WAI/highlights/about-rss.html
