Celebrating World Wetlands Day, 2nd February

World Wetlands Day is celebrated on February 2nd each year. It was first celebrated in 1997 and marks the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance which was signed in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971.

The Ramsar Convention defines wetlands as "areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meters."

Each year, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and community groups around the world celebrate this day by undertaking actions, which both help raise awareness of the many benefits that wetlands provide and promote better wetlands management.
