Working at IWMI will give you the opportunity to interact with a multicultural, multidisciplinary team of research and non-research professionals. IWMI is an equal opportunity employer and believes in building a working environment that balances work life with home life as well as individual aspirations.

IWMI headquarters has up-to-date working facilities, a fully equipped auditorium, cafeteria, in-house bank and travel office for the convenience of staff. There are also shops, supermarkets and restaurants in the vicinity.

Equal Opportunity Employment
IWMI is committed to making staff appointments regardless of gender, race, national or social origin, political affiliation or any other form of personal identity. We work to ensure that all employees are treated in a fair and equitable way.

Salary Scales, Benefits & Allowances
IWMI recruits to three categories of staff:

  • International: positions which are advertised worldwide,
  • Regional: positions that are advertised in the geographic region of posting, and
  • National: positions for which advertisement and selection are made in the country of posting.

Appointments are generally made on three year renewable contracts, and salary scales, benefits and allowances are fixed for these three categories.

New staff are appointed to a point on the scale commensurate with three factors: the specific IWMI job role, qualifications and previous experience in similar roles

Benefits & Allowances

Flexitime

IWMI’s flexitime policy allows staff members to work according to a time schedule that fits with personal commitments as well as IWMI’s requirements. Staff need to work the required 8 hours per day and should be in office during core time which is 10 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Working From-Home
In special circumstances, a staff member may obtain permission to work from home. Permission is also given to work from a location that is not the home base after consulting with the supervisor.

Gender Balance
IWMI continues to expand its efforts to increase gender balance by targeting recruitments for female researchers from developing countries. We are also currently training female staff for management positions through the development of leadership and management skills.

Performance-Based Incentives
IWMI links strategic and operational objectives to annual performance planning. Employee progress is reviewed periodically with a structured review of performance and achievement carried out at the end of the year which is linked to a reward system.

Career Development
Currently IWMI invests 2 percent of its overall budget on training. IWMI’s learning culture fosters both personal and professional development. IWMI encourages employees to constantly challenge the ‘status quo’ for the betterment of the organization.

Capacity Building
IWMI’s capacity building program promotes a network-based approach to collaborative research while expanding the role of researchers from developing countries in our research efforts. We currently run a two-year Post Doctoral Fellowship Program.

Spouse/ Partner Employment Opportunities at IWMI
IWMI’s family–friendly policies support dual career families and help spouses or partners look for prospective employment. Opportunities may exist at IWMI, if spouses have the skills and experience IWMI seeks.

An In-house Crèche
For the convenience of staff with young children, there is a crèche at headquarters with trained professionals to care for the children.

School Facilities
The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) is an international school offering both primary and secondary education, and is located within close proximity to IWMI headquarters. OSC has highly qualified, globally recruited teachers and a well-equipped campus with up-to-date facilities. The school prepares senior students for the International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.
