PARAKRAMA WELIGAMAGE

Agricultural Economist

Parakrama Weligamage has ten years of experience in research in irrigation and food production in Asia. He has compiled (with Randolph Barker and others), World Irrigation and Water Statistics, a comprehensive collection of global and national level data on irrigation and water, which will be regularly published by IWMI. He has involved in planning and supervision of household socio-economic surveys in rural communities in irrigation systems and rain forests in Sri Lanka researching on folk knowledge, impact of infrastructure on poverty, multiple uses of irrigation water and value of water in agricultural production and fisheries. He is comfortable with statistical and econometric analysis of complex and high volume data using SPSS and LIMDEP and poses a working knowledge in HTML. In-depth knowledge on economics of investment in irrigation systems in Sri Lanka in one end and on the other on analysing key global and regional issues in food production are considered as his key strengths. He is familiar with agricultural systems in India, Pakistan, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Parakrama is actively engaged university level teaching in agricultural marketing, agricultural development and policy and many other subjects and also in professional associations in Sri Lanka. He was the secretary of the social sciences section of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, the largest learned society in Sri Lanka. In 1999 he initiated and coordinated establishing a training facility for young social scientists with the patronage of the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka. He also conceptualized planned and is managing a URL for the benefit of agricultural economists with an interest on Sri Lanka. The web-site hosts Sri Lankan Journal of Agricultural Economics. He has more 33 publications to his credit.
