NEELANGA WERAGALA

Water Resources Engineer

Global Change, Water and Environment Group

Neelanga Weragala is a civil engineer. He has completed his BSc. and MSc. degrees at the Hydraulics & Hydro-Technical constructions department in the faculty of Engineering at Peoples Friendship University, Moscow, Russia.

Prior to joining IWMI, he worked at the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation & Development Corporation for 3 years. His work there at the Research & Designs division involved Storm water drainage design in urban areas , data collection and analysis in Colombo drainage canal network, design of flood gates at Beira-Lake sea outfall ,and computer modeling of urban watersheds etc.

His current work includes hydrological and basin water allocation modeling in the Walawe river, Sri Lanka, development of a smallholder model tool kit for Land and Water management, and meteorological data analysis for development of drought indices for South West Asia.

His other interests are in the field of information technology where he holds a Bachelors degree (2nd class upper division) from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has developed hydrology & GIS related software with Java and VisualBsaic programming languages and is good at client-server technologies, internet technologies and database management systems. He has also worked as an IT lecturer on part time basis.
