Madar Samad has more than 20 years experience as an agricultural economist dealing with research in the field of agricultural and rural development, project planning and evaluation, policy analysis and project management. He has gained experience in overseas assignments undertaken in Sudan, Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Indonesia, India and Nepal. He began his career as a Demonstrator/Tutor, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Colombo taking charge of the tutorial and laboratory sessions in agricultural chemistry for undergraduate students. There onwards as a Research and Training Officer attached to the Agrarian Research and Training Institute (ARTI) designed and implemented actions plans for training programs for agriculture and rural development while functioning as a Sri Lankan Team leader for ARTI/Agricultural University of Wageningen Joint Project. He was the Head, Agricultural Evaluation Division of the ARTI and was responsible for planning developing research activities of the Agrarian Research and Training Institute, Sri Lanka from 1990-July 1991. As an Assistance to Director for Research (IWMI) liaised with various international donor agencies, research organizations on matters pertaining to work of Research of IWMI while formulating a project monitoring system, preparing annual budgets etc. As a Research Associate (Jan. 1993-July 2001) he was responsible for providing technical support for research projects while organizing seminars, workshops for disseminating research findings. As a Senior Regional Researcher he was able to monitor functions of the regional offices. He has gained experience as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya and move towards becoming a Thesis Supervisor at the same University. He was attached to the University of Colombo from 1991-94 as the External Examiner/Dissertation Supervisor. He has worked as a Consultant Agricultural Economist at the Coconut Research Institute and also as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Colombo.
