Bharat R Sharma has over 25 years experience in conducting and managing natural resources management research specially for surface and ground water resources, on-farm water management, reclamation of saline and waterlogged soils, use of poor quality waters, and development of water resources in hilly areas. His key contributions included development of water savings techniques for irrigation of rice, improving on-farm water management in large irrigation commands, participatory irrigation management, ensuring hydrological sustainability of rice-wheat cropping system in Indus-Gangetic Plains, development of regional salt and water balance models in the critical irrigation commands, ground water management, development of integrated land and water management plans, tillage and irrigation requirements of important crops, watershed management and development of water resources in the hilly areas.
Since 1997, B.R. Sharma was Asst. Director General (Integrated Water Management), Natural Resource Management Division of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. As ADG (IWM), he was responsible for management of research in the area of integrated management of water resources at the national level. He has wide national and international experience in liaisoning with other ministries, research organizations and donor agencies. He started his career in 1977 as a research scientist (6 years) and then worked as senior researcher (5 years), Project Coordinator - Water Management (5 years), and Project Coordinator Ground Water Management (4 years). Dr. Sharma is member of the Indian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage, ICID Working Group on Irrigated Agriculture under Drought and Water Scarcity Conditions (WG-IADWS), Research Advisory and Management Committees of the three research institutes and Board of Management of two universities. He has more than 100 research and policy publications to his credit.
Bharat R Sharma was appointed Sr. Researcher, IWMI-India Office, New Delhi under the IWMI-South Asia Regional Office, Hyderabad, effective April 2003. Since then he has been engaged in projects related to drought assessment and management in southwest Asia, system level water savings under rice-wheat cropping system in Indo-Gangetic basin and energy-water nexus, groundwater governance and management and river linking project. He was also responsible for organizing several International Policy Dialogues, Conferences and Workshops.
