Mr. Abdul Hakeem Khan is heading the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in Pakistan since September 2005. He has been managing project plans and resources before moving up as Head of IWMI Pakistan. He has basically graduated in Agricultural Engineering in 1987 from the University of Engineering and Technology in Peshawar, Pakistan. He started his professional career with a USAID-World Bank funded project on water management at main and secondary level of irrigation system in the northern Pakistan. He joined IWMI in 1989 and has been working with it since then with a break of one year from mid 2001 to mid 2002 when he joined another engineering consulting firm. He has also worked for the Asian Development Bank on short term basis from time to time. He has been working in the irrigation and water management sector in different capacities from Field Engineer to Irrigation Engineer, Principal Irrigation Engineer, Irrigation Management Specialist, Project Manager and now Head IWMI Pakistan. He has worked throughout Pakistan on different projects related to surface and groundwater management, operation, maintenance, modernization of irrigation systems and participatory irrigation management. He has worked extensively practically in the field at the tertiary, secondary and primary irrigation systems with the farmers and government departments. He has vast experience in working on small farmer managed systems and large government controlled traditional and modern automatic systems. Capacity building of the canal operating agency staff and water users under the institutional reforms and modernization program in the irrigation sector is another important area where he has been planning, organizing and conducting the training programs in different socio-cultural systems.
