Working at IWMI is an enriching and rewarding experience. Our 280 locally and internationally recruited staff encompass research scientists, engineers, IT experts, communications experts and administrators. As water becomes scarcer, there is an urgent need to find ways to grow crops to feed the world's expanding population on limited land, using minimal water and safeguarding fragile environmental services. IWMI undertakes project-based research with this aim from its 13 offices across Asia and Africa.

IWMI is one of 15 organizations that make up the CGIAR Consortium. The organization is expanding its collaborative work with its sister organizations under an exciting new 'mega program' that will widen its focus on Water, Ecosystems and Land.

In 2008, the World Bank ranked IWMI as 'outstanding' for its performance, based on outputs such as the number of peer-reviewed articles in internationally recognized journals, capacity-strengthening activities and data-management processes. IWMI is one of four centers in the CGIAR to receive this rating, the highest of three performance categories. The Bank has a policy of results-based funding, so this means IWMI receives considerable World Bank support, in addition to funding from some 60 governments, private foundations, and international and regional organizations.
