Call for participation in the India Media Dialogue on The Indus Basin – Challenges for Development

A National Media Dialogue on “The Indus Basin – Challenges for Development” in New Delhi and Bhakra-Nangal.

14-17 September 2016 in New Delhi and Bhakra-Nangal – Deadline 12 August 2016

The International Water Management Institute and The Third Pole are holding a National Media Dialogue on “The Indus Basin – Challenges for Development” in New Delhi and Bhakra-Nangal on 14-17 September, 2016.

The Indus Basin is shared by Afghanistan, China, India and Pakistan. As populations and economies grow and climate patterns change the river’s flow regime, the Indus Basin is under unprecedented pressure. Many of the mounting development challenges require action at multiple levels, including greater coordination and cooperation of joint management and development of the resource by all riparian countries.

This meeting will bring together experts and journalists to address the nature of these challenges and to support more informed and in-depth media coverage of key issues, ranging from managing supplies across competing sectors, ensuring water quality and environmental flows, and addressing the need for critical infrastructure to ensure resilience to future climate change. Participants will be able to discuss with experts key issues on surface water, groundwater, dams and development, climate change and the specific challenges facing India.

Participants will attend a special session on the Indus at the International River Symposium on 14 September, followed by half a day of interaction with experts on 15 September, both held in New Delhi. On 15 September evening participants will travel to Chandigarh and on 16 September there will be an all-day field trip to Bhakra Nangal, during which participants can interact with members of the Bhakra-Beas Management Board. This will be followed by a half day interactive session in Chandigarh on 17 September.

The organizers will cover travel and accommodation expenses.

Indian journalists reporting in any medium and/or language are invited to apply to participate in the dialogue. Those who wish to do so should send a letter of interest and two relevant clippings/links to Nitasha Nair (n.nair@cgiar.org) of IWMI, with a copy to Nirmal Sigtia (n.sigtia@cgiar.org) by 12 August 2016.

Preference will be given to journalists based in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
